A GREAT WAY TO EXERCISE AND LOSE WEIGHT: SWIMMING AND SNORKELING…

… ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT TO INCREASE YOUR TIME SWIMMING – OR TRY SNORKELING WITHOUT FEAR?

One of my favorite things to do is swim.  I feel fortunate that growing up both of my parents loved to swim and our school district had a wonderful pool, along with Summer Day Camp, where we were all given swimming lessons at a very young age.  On top of that, some 25+ years ago I tried snorkeling for the first time in the Bahamas.  I absolutely loved it and I was hooked!

My husband and I love to travel and, especially to go on cruises. That has enabled me to go on many snorkel excursions in the Bahamas, Mexico and numerous Caribbean islands.  We first saw someone using one of these full face snorkel masks a couple of years ago when we were in Mexico and we asked a about them.  He told us that he loved it, but when we asked the price he  said he paid $200 for it, so I really just figured that was the end of that.

On another cruise late last year, we saw another guy with one and when we asked him he said that he had gotten his on Amazon for less than $50, which I was thrilled to hear.  Right after we got home I went ahead and ordered one — a S/M size for me and a L/XL for my husband.

I know several people, including some of my family members, who have struggled with using a mask and snorkel and, thus didn’t have a good experience so never wanted to go snorkeling again. Either water got in their masks or the mask was too big, or too small or they just couldn’t get the hang of breathing into the snorkel.  I have to say that using a full face snorkel mask is truly a game-changer.

We went to the Bahamas at the end of January, and unfortunately, it was way too cold for me to swim. Keep in mind that the reason I get cold much easier now than before is that I lost all my ‘padding’. I sat at the beach wrapped up in towels, while others were happy to go swimming. So I was a bit disappointed that I hadn’t gotten a chance to try my new mask then. swimming for weight loss

Well, come this past April, it was warm enough for me to start swimming in our pool and I was finally able to use the mask. It truly is incredible.  You just breathe normally into it so you don’t have to come up for air, the mask doesn’t fog up like most standard ones do.  I included a photo of me swimming in my pool here – you’ll notice I’m also wearing fins (they are really half-fins) so those help even more.

I don’t recall how many laps I swam the first day but within a couple of days I swam 71 laps (and you can see that my pool is quite large).  Prior to that the most I ever swam was probably 26 or so.

This past weekend my husband and I went to Siesta Key beach in Sarasota — it is our favorite beach in the U.S. and has consistently been voted as #1 or one of the top five beaches. I was very happy that I finally got to try the new mask.  The water was nice and warm.  I did not use my fins.  Not only did I stay in the water longer than usual but I actually also did laps in the ocean – something I’ve never done before.  It is so amazing when you put your head under the water for the first time and see all kinds of fish around you that you don’t normally see.  I can’t wait to use it in Mexico and the Caribbean, while on our next cruise in a few weeks.

Of course both my new mask and fins I bought on Amazon, so I’m including links to those exact ones here should you want to order them.  There are now many others that cost even less but I can really only attest for the one I ordered which is why I’m sharing these specific links. As always I suggest you read the reviews first for any you consider.  When I go on Amazon to order things (pretty much daily…) I always enter two key filters for my search — #1 PRIME SHIPPING ( I love Amazon Prime) and #2 Average Customer Review is 4 stars or better.
